Disability: the legal provisions

As an employee, you are generally entitled to a state disability pension in the event of disability. However, this only applies in the case of permanent disability. To receive this, you must submit an application for determination of disability. However, the amount of the state disability pension is usually too low to cover the monthly costs of housing, energy, food and other obligations. In addition, the state disability pension usually has to be reapplied for every two years. If you have a temporary disability, you will not receive a state disability pension, but rather rehabilitation benefits. Medical and occupational rehabilitation measures will be taken to try to reintegrate you into the workforce.

Difference between basic disability insurance and occupational disability insurance (OD)

Basic disability insurance is financial protection in the event of the loss of specific abilities. The insured event is independent of whether you are still able to work or not. Physical disability insurance is therefore an inexpensive alternative to occupational disability insurance (OD).

Occupational disability insurance (OD) insures your ability to work. It protects you financially if you are unable to work for a certain period of time or permanently due to physical or mental illness or an accident.
