What is disability insurance?

Basic disability insurance, also known as physical disability insurance, provides protection against the financial consequences of losing basic physical or mental abilities such as walking, grasping, seeing, hearing or speaking. The payment of an agreed monthly pension can be used to compensate for loss of income, pay for carers or cover medical treatment.

Alternative to occupational disability

Basic disability insurance applies regardless of whether you are still able to work or not

That is why a disability insurance makes sense

Walking, grasping, seeing and hearing are things we take for granted as long as we are able to do them. However, if you lose one of these basic abilities, you may no longer be able to work or you may need a carer to help you cope with everyday life. Basic ability insurance is worthwhile because it protects you from the financial consequences of losing certain abilities.

Disability: the legal provisions

As an employee, you are generally entitled to a state disability pension in the event of disability. However, this only applies in the case of permanent disability. To receive this, you must submit an application for determination of disability. However, the amount of the state disability pension is usually too low to cover the monthly costs of housing, energy, food and other obligations. In addition, the state disability pension usually has to be reapplied for every two years. If you have a temporary disability, you will not receive a state disability pension, but rather rehabilitation benefits. Medical and occupational rehabilitation measures will be taken to try to reintegrate you into the workforce.
