How can we help you today?

explained simply

What is disability insurance?

Disability insurance, also known as physical disability cover, provides protection against the financial consequences of losing basic physical or mental abilities such as walking, grasping, seeing, hearing or speaking. The payment of an agreed monthly benefit can help to offset loss of income, pay for carers or cover the cost of medical treatment.
Your benefits

Physical and mental abilities covered

For physically demanding jobs

Personal accident insurance is particularly useful for those in jobs that involve mainly physical work

Alternative to occupational disability insurance

Disability insurance applies regardless of whether the person is still able to work or not

That is why disability insurance makes sense

Walking, reaching, seeing or hearing are taken for granted as long as we are able to do them. However, if you lose one of these basic abilities, you may no longer be able to work, or you may need a carer to help you cope with everyday life.

Disability insurance is worth taking out, as it protects you from the financial consequences of losing certain abilities.

What are the basic skills?

With our disability insurance, you can protect yourself against the financial consequences of losing the following basic abilities:
Senses: sight, speech, hearing, balance
Physical abilities: walking, sitting, standing, using an arm, using a hand, kneeling or bending down, lifting/carrying, grasping/holding, writing
Mental abilities: intellect, memory

In addition, basic disability cover also applies in the event of a serious illness such as cancer, a heart attack, a stroke, multiple sclerosis, a coma or paraplegia.

Who is disability insurance suitable for?

Disability insurance is a sensible option for everyone, as an impairment of an essential physical or mental ability often leads to financial outlay or makes it impossible to continue working.

However, it is particularly useful for:
People whose work involves mainly physical activities
Professional athletes
Artists
People whose jobs put them at increased risk of accidents

Disability: The legal provisions

As an employee, you are generally entitled to a state disability pension in the event of disability. However, this only applies in the case of permanent disability. To claim this, you must submit an application for a disability assessment. The amount of the state disability pension is, however, usually too low to cover monthly costs for housing, energy, food and other obligations. Furthermore, you usually have to reapply for the state disability pension every two years.

If your disability is temporary, you will not receive a state disability pension, but rather rehabilitation allowance. Medical and vocational rehabilitation measures are used to try to reintegrate you into the workforce.

The difference between disability insurance and occupational disability insurance (ODI)

Basic ability insurance provides financial protection in the event of the loss of specific abilities. The claim is triggered regardless of whether you are still able to carry out your profession or not. Physical disability cover is therefore an affordable alternative to occupational disability insurance (ODI).

Occupational disability insurance (ODI) covers your ability to work. It provides financial protection if you are no longer able to carry out your work for a specific period or permanently due to physical or mental illness or an accident.

Case study 2

Maria Muster is 25 years old and works full-time as a lorry driver. She knows from her colleagues that for many of them, sitting for long periods is not sustainable until retirement. She is therefore already making provisions by taking out personal accident insurance. She has chosen a 35-year policy term and a monthly payout of €900 in the event of a claim. Ms Muster does not wish to receive a lump-sum payment in the event of serious illness.
