Q: Private Doctor Reimbursement: How much money will I get back?

Once you have submitted your invoice to your health insurance company, you will generally receive 100% of the remaining costs in the case of partial reimbursement by the statutory health insurance and 80% reimbursement in all other cases. Private health insurance provides access to medical treatment, typically without long waiting times and independent of doctors covered by public health insurance. It covers the costs of doctors of choice as well as additional medical services that go beyond statutory insurance coverage. Elective doctor insurance makes sense if you want to choose your doctor or therapist freely and flexibly without having to think about the cost of treatment. You receive personalised and comprehensive medical advice as well as holistic treatments - from physical to mental health, depending on the insurance package you choose.

Private doctor costs

As elective doctors set their own fees, it is difficult to determine a generalised cost. In general, the cost of a visit to an elective general practitioner is between 80 and 120 euros, while an appointment with a specialist (such as an orthopaedist, dermatologist or cardiologist) costs between 150 and 200 euros. (last update 05.2024) If you see an elective doctor without private health insurance, you will have to pay the full cost of treatment yourself. After payment, you can submit an application for reimbursement to your statutory health insurance company. Usually around 10-20% of the invoice amount is reimbursed. Private health insurance, on the other hand, covers up to 100% of the costs.
