When is pet insurance a good idea?

Pets can also fall ill or have an accident, which can result in unexpectedly high vet bills. Pet insurance covers these costs and offers the best protection for your four-legged friend.

Costs of pet insurance

The cost of pet insurance ranges from €150 to €709 per year*, depending on the type of pet, its age and the level of cover chosen.

Case study: Dog accident insurance

Four-year-old Bruno is playing with his little dog. Suddenly, "Joy" swallows the bouncing rubber ball. The operation is expected to cost almost €1,000. Thanks to the dog accident insurance, which costs €274 a year*, 80% of the costs incurred were reimbursed.

Case study: Cat accident insurance

Mia is 5 years old and was happily playing with her toys. Suddenly, she fell from the balcony. She broke her leg. The treatment is expected to cost €700. Thanks to the cat health insurance policy costing €235 a year* that Mia’s owner took out two years ago, he has already been reimbursed for 80% of the costs incurred.

Case study: Dog liability insurance

Two-year-old Charly runs across the road towards her friend; a driver travelling at 80 km/h loses control of his car, damages five parked vehicles and crashes into an upmarket shop window. You are held liable for damages amounting to EUR 200,000. With the optional dog liability insurance, Charly’s owner is well protected; the costs incurred are covered by the additional dog liability insurance policy costing EUR 36 per year*.

* The premium amount is based on the animal’s age at the start of the policy and the level of cover required, and is subsequently adjusted only in line with changes in the Consumer Price Index.

What does pet insurance cover?

Pet insurance covers veterinary treatment costs due to illness or accident. Depending on requirements, additional packages can also be selected, such as liability insurance or criminal legal protection cover, as well as reimbursement of care costs in the event of hospitalisation or death of the policyholder.

What does pet insurance cost?

The cost of pet insurance is between 130 euros and 616 euros per year, depending on the type of animal, the age of the animal and the scope of benefits selected.

What does dog health insurance cost?

Dog health insurance costs between €295 and €616 per year, depending on the age of the animal and the desired scope of benefits.

What does accident/health insurance for cats cost?

Vet insurance with accident/illness cover for cats costs between €185 and €381 per year, depending on their age.

How does pet insurance work?

Pet insurance works in a similar way to private health insurance. Any veterinary treatment costs incurred are reimbursed up to the agreed amount. The premium to be paid for this is calculated annually for pet insurance. However, a half-yearly, quarterly or monthly payment method and payment type can also be agreed.

Can I take out pet insurance for several animals at the same time?

Yes, pet insurance can be taken out in a separate policy for every healthy cat and every healthy dog from the age of 8 weeks up to the age of 6 years.
