What is oldtimer insurance?

Oldtimer insurance is a type of motor insurance specifically designed for classic cars. As classic cars are used differently from everyday vehicles, classic car insurance is often cheaper. This is due to the lower risk of accidents and the fact that they are used less frequently. Furthermore, there are different requirements for registering and insuring a classic car.

Oldtimer registration in Austria

Oldtimer von der Seite

Is registration as an oldtimer compulsory?

In Austria, it is not compulsory to register a classic car as a “historic vehicle”, but doing so does have a number of advantages:
Lower insurance premiums
Tax savings resulting from the abolition of the standard consumption tax (NoVA)
Section 57a: The ‘red sticker’ inspection is only required every two years
Exemptions from the Section 57a inspection, e.g. in the case of driving restrictions due to emissions or braking performance
