What is household insurance?

With household insurance, all contents within your flat or house are insured against certain types of property damage. This includes fire damage, storm damage, water damage and burglary damage to furniture, electrical appliances or glass, for example. Allianz household insurance also covers gross negligence. Personal liability insurance is also included.

When does household insurance make sense?

Home insurance is a good idea whether you rent or own your home, as it covers all your personal belongings within your own four walls against certain risks. In addition, the included personal liability insurance protects you against justified and unjustified claims for damages.

Checklist for the right home insurance

Insurance sums: Select the amount of insurance sums appropriate to the value of your household contents and valuables.
Covered risks: Consider whether, in addition to conventional risks such as fire, water, storm and burglary, you also want to insure against other risks such as bicycle theft or damage to frozen goods following a power failure.
Excess & discounts: Depending on the excess chosen, the annual premium for household insurance can be reduced. Discounts are also available for existing alarm systems,
security doors and external protection.
Contract & flexibility: The premium amount may vary depending on the payment method and contract term. Consider how flexible you want the insurance contract to be.

Frequently asked questions about household insurance

What does household insurance cover?

Conventional household insurance policies do not cover damage caused by yourself. With Allianz household insurance, you can also insure yourself against your own negligence with the optional Allrisk additional cover in the Smart or Max package. This includes both clumsiness and gross negligence.

Does household insurance cover your own fault?

Conventional home insurance policies do not cover damage that you have caused yourself. Allianz Mein Zuhause is different. With the Smart or Max package, you can also protect yourself against these risks with the optional Allrisk additional cover. Because minor mishaps can happen quickly.

For example:

if you knock the television off the TV stand while vacuuming,
if the children break the expensive floor vase in the living room while playing ball,
if the drill falls into the wash basin while doing DIY and renders it unusable, etc.

Is home insurance compulsory in Austria?

Home insurance is not compulsory in Austria. However, it is highly recommended because it covers damage to your home caused by events such as fire, burglary, vandalism, storms or water damage. Without insurance, you would have to bear these costs yourself. In addition, personal and sports liability insurance covers damage that you accidentally cause to others, e.g. if you live in a rented flat and accidentally cause water damage to a neighbouring flat.

Where does household insurance apply?

Allianz household insurance applies to the premises specified in the insurance policy. These include your flat/house and compartments or rooms in the attic, cellars, sheds, garages and similar areas used exclusively by you or persons living in your household.

What happens to your home insurance when you move house?

If you move, the premium for your household insurance must be adjusted. During the move, your belongings are insured against traffic accidents if you are driving yourself. The prerequisite is that you notify us of your new address before you move house.

What is the difference between household insurance and home insurance?

Home contents insurance covers all movable items within your home. This includes furniture, electrical appliances, clothing and valuables. Home insurance covers damage to the building itself and to outbuildings such as garages or tool sheds on the property.

What should you do in the event of damage?

Document the damage thoroughly (photos, descriptions, receipts, documents) and keep damaged items.
Report the damage to your insurance company immediately and provide all the information they need. With Allianz, you can report damage by telephone or online.
Follow the insurance company's procedure, otherwise you may lose your right to compensation.
The insurance company assesses the damage and checks the coverage.
After that, a settlement proposal for the repair will be provided as soon as possible.

Is my dog covered by my household insurance?

With Allianz household insurance, your dog is covered under your personal and sports liability insurance if it is listed in the insurance policy. This means you are insured against any damage caused by your dog.
