What is household insurance?

With household insurance, the contents of your flat or house are covered against certain types of property damage. This includes, amongst other things, fire damage, storm damage, water damage and damage caused by burglary to items such as furniture, electrical appliances or glass. Allianz household contents insurance also covers clumsiness and gross negligence. Personal liability insurance is also included.

Household insurance is a good idea whether you rent or own your home, as it covers your personal belongings within your home against certain risks. In addition, the included personal liability cover protects you against both valid and invalid claims for damages.

Checklist for choosing the right household insurance

Insurance cover: Choose a level of cover that matches the value of your home contents and your valuables.

Covered risks: Consider whether, in addition to standard risks such as fire, water damage, storm damage and burglary, you would also like to insure against other risks such as bicycle theft. Damage caused by frozen goods is included in all policies. The premium amount may vary if a mid-year surcharge applies.

Taking out home contents insurance is not compulsory in Austria. However, it is highly recommended as it covers damage to your home caused by events such as fire, burglary, vandalism, storms or water damage from burst pipes. Without insurance, you would have to bear these costs yourself. In addition, personal and sports liability insurance covers damage you cause to others, e.g. if you live in a rented flat and cause water damage in a neighbouring flat.

Where does household insurance apply?

Household insurance covers movable items within your home. This includes furniture, electrical appliances, clothing and valuables. Home insurance, on the other hand, covers damage to the building itself and to outbuildings such as garages or tool sheds on the property.

What should you do if damage occurs?

Make sure you document the damage thoroughly – take photos, write descriptions, keep receipts and other documents, and keep the damaged items.
